About Dan Willett and his photography

Once again thanks again for stopping by my little corner of Cyber Space. I'm sorry this isn't the most sophisticated web site that you have seen, but I did it myself and I'm pretty damn proud of it. This page is divided into the following sections. You can click on the respective link to go there directly, or you can scroll down through the page.

What I Do

All of the images currently in this web site are night time shots taken around different cities and towns that I have visited or lived in. I "got serious" about photography three years ago when I moved to North Carolina. I purchased an old Hasselblad medium-format camera and started taking classes on black-and-white darkroom processing. Influenced by a couple of local photographers and photography teachers I gravitated toward night time photography. The fact that I also have this thing called a "Real Job" during the day also had some influence on learning to photograph at night.

Stuff I'm Involved In

Durham Arts Council - www.durhamarts.org
A private/non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the arts in Durham and the Triangle. I have taken all of my photography related classes at the D.A.C. and all of the images on my web site have been printed in their 4x5 darkroom. An outstanding setup !!

Visual Art Exchange Association and Gallery - www.visualartexchange.org
VAE is a resource created by artists for artists. They provide support for local artists through education programs and providing a gallery for them to exhibit their work. I have been fortunate to be selected for numerous exhibits over the years, especially their annual Never Exhibited Works exhibit.

Center for Documentary Studies - http://cds.aas.duke.edu
The C.D.S. at Duke University serves as a resource for individuals and groups wishing to learn or develop documentary skills. As some point in time I will eventually earn a Certificate in Documentary Studies, although the main focus for taking classes at C.D.S. is to broaden my artistic and technical merit as a photographer. A class at C.D.S. that was particularly influential on my work was "Dream Street: W. Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh Photographs.

How I Do It

I already mentioned the old Hasselblad I use. It came with a 110mm Carl Zeiss Planar lense. The setup produces unbelievably clear images. For the night time photographs I stop the aperture all the way (f16 for this lense) for maximum depth of field. I use very slow film. Ilford Pan-f ISO 50 to minimize the grain in the enlargements. When shooting I "bracket" at 30-second intervals and pick the negative with the best composition and ideal density. The total exposure time can range from 2 - 20 minutes depending on the available light. All my work is produced 100% manually in the traditional darkroom. Over the years I have developed/learned dodging and burning techniques to enhance the printing of my night time images.
